Edna Bea Devlin-Little passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 29, 2015 in San Antonio. She was born in Poteet, Texas to Hunter and Ozella Crouch Barrow. Her parents were each from pioneering families in Atascosa County. Mrs. Devlin-Little represented the very finest attributes of an educator and parent. Affectionately known as Bea, her life was dedicated to helping and educating young people, including her own, as a mother and grandmother and her "community children" as a teacher, counselor, and administrator. Her formal education included graduation from Brackenridge High School and college education at Baylor University, Trinity University and University of Texas - Pan American. Bea received her Master of Education degree from Our Lady of the Lake University. She held Texas certifications as an elementary and high school teacher and as a supervisor, counselor, and administrator on the secondary level. Mrs. Devlin-Little possessed a full and diverse reservoir of occupational experience. After graduation from college and before entering education, she was employed for three years with Eastern Airlines. Her first teaching assignment was in Pharr, Texas as an elementary school teacher and eventually she taught middle school courses in Pharr. When she moved to San Antonio, Bea first served as a social studies teacher and then as a counselor at John Nance Garner Middle School. Bea worked as a counselor at MacArthur High School from 1972-76. She was appointed Assistant Principal at James Madison High School in 1976 and stayed 5 years. North East Independent School District decided to open the John H. Wood Middle School in 1981 and Bea was asked to be its first Principal. She later returned to Madison High School in 1983 and served as Principal until 1993, when she retired. She not only was the first female Principal in the North East School District, but also one of the first female administrators at the secondary level in the State of Texas.
